If I had ever been sat down and told I was to play at only one course and nowhere else for the rest of my life, I would have chosen The Old Course at St. Andrews.
1921 : At 19, Bobby Jones made his debut at the Open Championship on the Old Course. It was at the infamous 11th High Hole that Jones took four shots to get out of a bunker, then picked up his ball and disqualified himself. After that day, Jones would never lose another match or contest at the Old Course.
1927 : Jones broke a new championship record by six strokes at the birthplace of golf. He was lifted onto the shoulders of the excited crowd and paraded off the 18th green with his Calamity Jane putter raised high out of harm's way.
1930 : Winning the amateur championship put Jones on his way to the Grand Slam. He knew the locations of all the little pot bunkers and devious little slopes and swales, including the tremendously challenging 17th, the Road Hole, which proved pivotal to his success.
1958 : Honored with the Freedom of the City Award for not only his achievements in golf, but because Bobby Jones was "...a man of outstanding character, courage and accomplishment." Jones was the first American in 200 years to be honored by St. Andrews; Benjamin Franklin was the previous recipient.
1971 : When the news reached St. Andrews that Bobby Jones died on December 18th, golfers stopped their play and the flag at the clubhouse was lowered to half-mast. A memorial service was held for Bobby Jones on May 4, 1972 at the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity Church in St. Andrews.
2018 : Global Ambassador Miguel Ángel Jiménez won the 2018 Senior Open Championship at the Old Course, St. Andrews. After achieving victory by one stroke with a par at the 18th, Jiménez said, "It has always been my ambition to win at the Home of Golf. It feels like I am part of history."
NOW : The 10th hole at the Old Course is named after Bobby Jones, making him one of only two people to have an eponymous hole on the Old Course. The other is Old Tom Morris.
PLAN YOUR OWN EPIC GOLF TRIP : The Old Course is open to the public on most days. If you aren't one of the lucky few to receive a guaranteed tee time each year at the time of registration, you can submit a ballot two days before you wish to play on the St. Andrews website.
It's true. Rainfall in St. Andrews is significant. The driest month is February, and precipitation reaches its peak in August. Be prepared, drizzle to downpour. Layering is key. Choose pieces that are perfect for playing at the Old Course, climbing to the top of the St. Rules tower with an amazing view and dinner at the Jigger Inn.
